Newtown To Hold Q&A Thursday On Proposed Fire Services Agreement

The borough is weighing an agreement with Newtown Township to share the cost of fire services, but officials are at an impasse over the fee.

NEWTOWN, PA — Newtown borough officials are set to meet Thursday night to continue considering a proposed agreement to share the cost of firefighting services with Newtown Township.

Borough solicitors will lead a presentation and discussion on the proposal, followed by a question-and-answer session, according to the Newtown Borough Council’s agenda. The meeting is scheduled to start at 7 p.m. at the Chancellor Center.

Borough and township officials have been in talks about the agreement for about six months, but negotiations over the price are at an impasse.

The township has asked the borough to chip in nearly $250,000 to cover services dating back to January, but borough officials have offered to pay about $178,000 starting next year, Bucks Local News reports.

The Newtown Township Emergency Services Department is transitioning from a volunteer firefighting force to a paid force due to a shortage of volunteers. Fire Chief Glenn Forsyth told the Newtown Borough Council in July that the department’s volunteer force was “dwindling quickly.”
