NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Students at the Newtown Middle School this week will again be camping out for hunger and collecting canned and non-perishable food for local food pantries and shelters in Bucks County.

Called "CANping For Hunger," the students will be collecting donations of food from the community in addition to taking part in a camp out that will include toasting marshmallows, taking nighttime nature walks and sharing ghost stories.

As bookends to their camping experience, they will be collecting donations of food from the public between 7 and 10 p.m. Friday, Sept. 27 and again from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. Saturday morning, Sept. 28.

"If we were to receive one canned or non-perishable food item from each student in the district, we would have over 10,000 items to donate," said food drive organizers. "That would be incredible. Last year we collected over 3,700 pounds of food. Our goal this year is 5,000 pounds. We need your help to reach this goal."

Kids huddle around a campfire during a previous "CANping For Hunger" service project.
