Newtown Quaker Kids Raise $2,515 for Two Bucks County Charities

The young people of Newtown Friends Meeting on Court Street have done it again. They held a “Virtual Simple Supper" to raise funds for charity and it was a huge success. They provided a whopping 170 servings of 17 different soups and 232 servings of 14 different desserts for pick-up on the Meetinghouse Porch.

This event raised over $2,515, bringing their total raised for charities over the past fourteen years to more than $36,500.

In lieu of prices for servings of soup and desserts for the Virtual Simple Supper, purchasers were asked to make donations when they picked up their orders.

Lisa Li of West Windsor, NJ, was head of the children’s Simple Supper Committee and was assisted by Sharon Hulihan of Newtown.

Adults in the Quaker Meeting provided food and the teenagers organized the Virtual Simple Supper. People ordered in advance and the teens had the orders waiting in compostable containers. Masks and social distancing were required during preparation and pick-up.

Soups included such varieties as Spicy Black Bean, West African Peanut Soup, Sweet Potato Red Curry, and Coconut Lentil Soup, Creamy Smoked Chicken and Rice, Italian Wedding Soup, Tuscan Bean and Kale, and Chicken Tortilla.

Desserts included Carrot Cake, Coconut Cake, Pumpkin Cookies, Apple Pie, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Brownies, Peach Torte, and Cherry Pie.

Proceeds from this year’s Simple Supper will go to Bucks County Interfaith Coalition for the Resettlement of Refugees (BCICRR) which sponsors Afghan refugee families in our area and Tuesday's Children, a charity that supports 9/11 Responders and their families.

The Newtown Friends Meeting youth select at least two charities to support each year. Previous recipients of the funds raised have been Habitat for Humanity, Syrian refugee relief via the Shelterbox; US hurricane relief via the All Hands Volunteers; Valley Youth House's Synergy Project for homeless youth in Bucks County and Allentown; Haiti Relief; The School for Leadership, Afghanistan (SOLA), the first boarding school for girls in Afghanistan; Greater Philadelphia Diaper Bank; Mercer Street Friends Center in Trenton. NJ; Penndel Food Pantry; Save Darfur; and Heifer International.

Newtown Friends Meeting, (http://www.newtownfriendsmeeting.org) co-founded by the Quaker artist and minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, holds services every First Day (Sunday) with classes for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. and traditional Quaker Meeting for Worship at 11:00 a.m. with people speaking out of the silence if they are moved to do so. Currently, people attending in person are asked to be vaccinated and wear masks. Others may attend via Zoom. The public is welcome at all events.
