Philadelphia Yearly Meeting (the four-state Quaker umbrella group of 11,000 Quakers) has created a scavenger hunt to help members of the Quaker community gain greater familiarity with Quaker facts, places, history and people in the Greater Philadelphia area.

The Philadelphia Quaker Yearly Meeting sponsoring the Scavenger Hunt is awarding points for such activities as: worship in one of the 103 Quaker Meetings other than your own in the four state area, find a statue of a Quaker (think: Mary Dyer at Friend Center in Philadelphia), have tea with an older or younger Quaker and tell us what you learned, find a bonnet worn by a Quaker woman in earlier times, find a painting by a Quaker artist (e.g. Edward Hicks’Peaceable Kingdom in Newtown Meeting), find a Quaker Meetinghouse where women built the roof, tell us what Quaker British actress Judi Dench said about her Quaker beliefs, find a Quaker graveyard with the grave of the grandmother of Meryl Streep, describe Paul Robeson’s connection to Quakers, visit a Quaker stop on the underground railroad, visit one of the biggest Quaker Meetinghouses in the world, name the three Quaker women among the five scheduled to be honored on the ten dollar bill by 2020, find the Quaker Meeting Burial Ground of the Quaker founder of the United States Marine Corps, etc.

Hoskins said, “Check the PYM website for a list of items. www.pym.org/scavenger-hunt. More are being added all the time, and we can make up our own. When you have completed a task, send an email (with accompanying photo or story is great) to hunt@newtownfriendsmeeting.org.
