Newtown, Wrightstown To Be Sprayed This Week For West Nile Mosquitoes

NEWTOWN, PA — The Bucks County Mosquito Control Program will be spraying Thursday in Newtown and Wrighgtown in an attempt to reduce high populations of mosquitoes capable of transmitting West Nile Virus.

In Wrightstown Township, the Health Department will spray the Grange fairgrounds on Penns Park Road. In Newtown Township, the area to be treated includes Upper Silver Lake and Old Frost roads.

The spray will begin at dusk.

According to information from the county, Duet, a Dual-Action Adulticide, will be dispensed at a rate of 0.75 ounces per acre. "The product is designed to provide quick, effective control of adult mosquito populations. The application material has a very low toxicity profile to mammals and will have negligible impact on non-target insects and the environment," the county said.

West Nile virus can cause humans to contract West Nile encephalitis, an infection that can result in an inflammation of the brain.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, all residents in areas where virus activity has been identified are at risk of contracting West Nile encephalitis.

If weather conditions do not allow application on September 7, then Friday, September 8, 2017 will be the backup date.
