Newtown's Halloween Art Scene Event Is Oct. 17
The deadline to register for window painting, scarecrow making and cupcake wars is Oct. 10.

Newtown’s annual Halloween Art Scene event is set for Oct. 17 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The event, a chance to get Newtown looking spooky for the upcoming holiday, features window painting, scarecrow making, a cupcake contest and a pet parade. The deadline to register is Oct. 10. The event raindate is Oct. 18. (The pet parade does not have a raindate.)

Window Painting
The cost to participate is $5 a window. Participants must paint a family-friendly freehand image that has a fall or Halloween theme. Windows are assigned on a first come, first served basis. One window will be assigned to each artist or group. Requests for specific windows may be honored, if possible. Artists younger than 13 must have adult supervision at all time. Prizes will be awarded.

Register and pick up supplies at Newtown Bicycle Shop parking lot, 30 N. State Street between 9-10 a.m. According to organizers: “Each artist will be assigned a specific space on the outside of a merchant’s window in Newtown’s shopping district. Paint only inside the specified area. DO NOT PAINT BACKGROUND – painting will be removed if background is painted!! Paint glass only using the paint provided. Do not paint window trim or the sidewalk. BYOB (Bring Your Own Brushes) and paper towels. Acrylic paint will be used and will stain unprotected surfaces or clothing, so please be careful. Dress accordingly.”
Scarecrow Contest
This contest if open to the general public and is free but you must be register by Oct. 10. Prizes will be awarded. According to organizers: “Scarecrow must have a 2”x2” wooden center support. Scarecrows may not touch the ground and must be free standing on the center support. No materials may be on the ground. Scarecrows must be weather-resistant. Do not use perishable goods. Please attach a permanent weatherproof sign on the scarecrow listing its title, category and creator(s). Check-in will be held at Newtown Bicycle Shop parking lot, 30 N. State Street, on Oct. 17 from 9 am – 10:30 am. Merchants will put up their own scarecrows. Scarecrows may be picked up only on Saturday, November 7.”
Cupcake Wars
This contest is free but registration is required by Oct. 10. Cupcakes should be homemade and presented on a disposable tray with the recipe for the cupcakes and frosting. From the organizers: “The theme of the cupcakes should reflect Fall/Halloween (1/2 dozen cupcakes per entrant). There will be two age groups; child (15 yrs. and under) and adult. Judging will be based on overall taste and presentation. Prizes will be awarded to each group and the winning cupcakes will be featured at the Caketeria for one day. Please bring your cupcakes to First National Bank, 40 S. State St. on Oct. 17 between 9:30-10:30 am. The winners will be announced at 11:30 am and prizes will be awarded at that time.”
Frankenweenie Pet Parade
This event is free to the public. It will be held Oct. 17 and there is no raindate. All pets who would like to march must register before Oct. 10. All pet owners must complete a Pet Owner Responsibility Form. “Costumed pets will assemble at Newtown Bicycle Shop at 11:30 am, parade up State St. and return to the bicycle shop where they will be judged. Pets (House pets only. No farm animals or wildlife) must be well behaved and owners must clean up after their pets. No Flexible, extendable leashes. The winners will be announced at 12:30 pm and prizes will be awarded,” according to organizers.
