Newtown's Market Day is This Weekend

The festivities are planned for Saturday and will include crafters, historical demonstrations, music, food and more.

It’s October in Newtown and that can only mean one thing (besides Halloween): Market Day!

Newtown Historic Association’s 38th annual colonial craft and art fair is scheduled for this Saturday. The rain date is Sunday. Festivities will be held in and around the Half Moon Inn, 105 Centre Ave.

Market Day features crafters, demonstrations and artists, as well as food and live music. The event is a longstanding tradition in town.

As explained by the Newtown Historic Association, “This custom revives an old harvest season tradition in Newtown, where long ago, local farmers brought their crops to town to sell and enjoy a day of festivities and contests that culminated with a horse race down State Street.”

More than 70 crafters are coming with a variety of items, including quilts, fine arts, ceramics, jewelry, photography and more.

The First Crossing Volunteers, a colonial militia revolutionary war encampment, will be set up in the backyard of the Half Moon Inn. There will be candle dipping, open hearth cooking, children’s colonial games and children’s crafts in the historic Boone Garden, behind the inn.

There are other children’s activities, including puppet shows at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. and a corn husking contest at 1:30 p.m. Scarecrow making will happen from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Half Moon Inn.

Plus there will be horse drawn hayrides and the Festival of Foods, which will feature local Newtown restaurants, including Isaac Newton’s, Black Horse Tavern and McCaffrey’s Market.

There will be a free shuttle bus provided by Pickering Manor Home. The shuttle will provide transport from the parking lot at New Life Christian Church at 4 Freedom Dr. to Market Day. There is also street parking and several public parking lots.
