Attempted Theft Of Oil, Resulting Spill Under Investigation In Newtown

During the incident, police said cooking oil spilled in the parking lot of the Newtown Borough Hall forcing its closure.

NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — An oil spill on Sunday during an attempted theft has forced the closure of the municipal lot next to the Newtown Borough Hall on North State Street.

Newtown Borough Police and the Newtown Fire Association responded to the spill, which was quickly determined to be used cooking oil from a storage container located on the nearby Brick Hotel property.

The state Department of Environmental Protection also responded to the scene along with Newtown Emergency Management.

Police said the spill was contained by the Newtown Fire Association and Copperhead Custom, an environmental services company, was dispatched for the clean up.

On Monday, officials determined that the municipal parking lot needed further cleaning and Copperhead Custom was again dispatched for cleanup.

The municipal lot will be closed until further notice.

The cause of the spill remains under investigation by the Newtown Borough Police, but initial findings show the spill was an attempted theft of used cooking oil.

There is no danger to the public from the spill, police said.

The public is asked to use caution when walking in the area of Borough Hall for the next several
days. All precautions have been taken to prevent the spill from entering the waterways, police said.
