NEWTOWN BOROUGH, Pa. — The Coffee Room on South State Street in Newtown will be closing its doors in August with plans to reopen under new ownership in September.

Owners Raj and Margaret Kumar announced the news in a Facebook posting on June 27.

"With much sadness - and excitement - we would like to announce that The Coffee Room will be welcoming you for the last time on Sunday, August 14," they wrote on Facebook. "Margaret and Raj would love to thank each and everyone who walked through our door and helped create this incredible community.

"We have been humbled with the extraordinary support of Newtown, friends - new and old, near and far, fabulous baristas and our amazing family. We have shared coffee along with friendship and countless laughs and smiles. Our next chapter is calling and it is time to move forward and say goodbye to our beloved cafe."

The Newtown couple opened the Coffee Room in 2017, brewing an alternative to the corporate java just down the street.

Margaret, a stay-at-home-mom back in 2017, said it was their daughter who suggested the idea of a coffee shop when they were discussing plans to open a business in their hometown.

"Luckily, for everyone, the door will only be closed for a bit," according to the Kumars.

Andrew and Jodi Dittman of Calm Waters Coffee in Bristol will be reopening the cafe as their second location in early September, according to the social media post.

"Andrew grew up in Newtown and is very excited to share his passion for coffee with a town he has called home," says the posting.

"Raj, Margaret, Mary, Thomas and Joseph bid The Coffee Room a fond farewell, but will still be seen meeting friends over coffee at Calm Waters Newtown."
