Guru's Indian Cuisine Reopening In Newtown Township
The owners have returned from India and are reopening Guru's Indian Cuisine at Jefferson and Sycamore Street in a limited capacity.

NEWTOWN, PA — There is good news for those who enjoy Indian food.
Guru’s Indian Cuisine in Newtown, which has been closed since January while its owners traveled to India to finalize the adoption of two girls, is reopening today for takeout.
"After a much-needed break to take care of our family, we're eager to dive back in," wrote Priya Guru in a Facebook posting. She operates the restaurant with her fiance and chef Ashni Kumar.

"While we get our feet wet again, we'll be starting with takeout only," said Guru.
For now, there won't be any dine-in service. The bar, however, will be open for drinks and limited appetizers while customers wait for their orders, she said.

The reopening also brings a major change to the menu. The restaurant is dropping its meat and seafood dishes and focusing solely on vegan and vegetarian offerings.
Guru said she's hoping the community is receptive to the new menu, which she said will be "good for your body and good for the environment. And I promise you that you won't miss meat," she said.
"I'm not asking everyone to turn vegetarian overnight, but one meal can have such a huge impact. You can touch so many lives. Consider one meal," she says.
According to Priya, the scaled-back and limited operations will give her additional time to focus on finalizing the adoption process while also bringing some money in to satisfy their financial obligations.
Guru said hopefully by the fall they can revert back to being a full-service restaurant with sit-down service. "We will have to," she said. "We can't survive on the takeout alone," she said.
"Stay tuned for updates and mouthwatering specials," added Priya. "Let's make this comeback tasty together."
Hours will be noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday and noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Guru's is closed on Tuesday. Patrons can call for takeout or order online.
Progress on the Adoption Front
Meanwhile, Guru said she's continuing to make progress toward the adoption of her two girls back in India. She's hoping to finalize the long and arduous process soon. That will require one more trip back to India, hopefully to bring the girls home.
"We got the initial approval from the United States last week. We're just waiting for final approval from the U.S. Consulate which comes within two weeks," she said. "From there the case goes to the local court in India and I'll have to go back after Mother's Day and hopefully bring the girls home.
"Finally I get to have my family," said Pryia, who is excited to bring her girls home and move on with her life, including getting married to her fiance and getting back to their restaurant.
"I am excited, nervous and my heart is full of so much love. I never experienced that before," said Priya. "It's everything together - the support from the community of Newtown, the adoption of my girls. I feel like I'm in a circle where I'm happy, stressed and exhausted and then I'm happy again. It's like a rollercoaster."
