Rare Image of Northern Lights Captured at Pennsylvania State Park

A Pennsylvania photographer was in the right place at the right time Tuesday night when he captured an awesome glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Photographer Kyle Yates shot this photo of the aurora borealis, a naturally-occurring light show in the sky, during a late-night visit to Clear Creek State Park in Sigel, Pa.
“This is not the first time I tried capturing the Northern Lights but this is the first successful capture I’ve ever had,“ Yates told Patch. “I never thought it would turn out as it did.“

Yates said he started about 10 miles away in Cook Forest State Park and did not see a single light streak.
“However, just by going around the different areas I was able to find a view through the Clarion River facing northward and watch the lights appear and disappear. I had to take many different photographs to finally get the one of most lights,” he said.

According to forecasters at the Space Weather Prediction Center, a geomagnetic storm Tuesday resulted in area sightings of the Northern Lights. Other sightings were reported in Ohio, Michigan, New York, Vermont, Maine and more, according to the Aurora Borealis Notifications Facebook page.
The aurora borealis display is due to electrons colliding with the upper reaches of Earth’s atmosphere, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
