Residents Report Big Losses From Scams: Newtown Twp. Police Report

NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Three residents are reporting large monetary losses from scams and fraudulent schemes, the Newtown Township Police Department is reporting.

Police reported the following incidents and arrests between August 4 and 7:

August 4

• At approximately 9 a.m., a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report elder fraud involving a phone scammer posing as the resident’s credit union with a large monetary loss. The investigation is ongoing.

• At approximately 4 p.m., a Newtown Township resident contacted police to report an incident of identity theft. A credit card was opened in her name and used to purchase firearms. An incident report was made to document the incident.

August 5

• At approximately 9 a.m., a Newtown Township resident stopped at police headquarters to report fraud involving scammers posing as the resident’s bank, couriers, and a large monetary loss. The investigation was referred to the detective division and is ongoing.

August 6

• At approximately 10 a.m., police conducted a traffic stop on the driver of a Jeep for committing a vehicle code violation in the area of Barclay Street. Upon speaking with the driver, the officer detected the odor of alcohol. The driver was unable to perform field sobriety tests satisfactorily and was placed under arrest for suspicion of driving under the influence. Charges are pending blood evidence results.

• At approximately 11:15 a.m., a Newtown Township resident stopped at to headquarters to report fraud involving pop-up computer message scammers, gift card purchases, and a large monetary loss. The investigation was referred to the detective division and is ongoing.
