Residents Scammed Out Of Thousands: Newtown Township Police
One of the scams involved an online job posting; the other was someone posing as a third-party company for Norton Antivirus.
NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — Two township residents lost thousands to scammers, one involving an online job posting and another by someone posing as a third-party company for Norton Antivirus, according to Newtown Township Police.
On March 20, police said a resident was applying for jobs online when a company mailed him a check and instructed him to buy materials using Visa, American Express, Google Play, and eBay gift cards.
The resident provided the scammers with his personal and bank account information and was defrauded over $11,000 before realizing it was a scam, police said.

On March 22, police said a Newtown Township woman was scammed by someone posing as a third-party company for Norton Antivirus.
When the third-party company contacted her, police said they explained that she was being issued a refund and needed to grant them remote access to her computer. Once she did, they explained that they refunded her too much and instructed her to purchase gift cards to cover the difference.

The total monetary loss was more than $3,000 before the resident realized she was scammed, police said.
