Rotary Club Bike Drive is Saturday

The Newtown Rotary Club’s used bike drive to support Pedals for Progress is Saturday at Council Rock High School North.

Adult and children’s bicycles in repairable condition will be accepted from 9 a.m. to noon. The event will be held rain or shine.

Each year, Pedals for Progress collects 3,000 to 5,000 bicycles for the needy. The nonprofit organization ships the bikes to developing countries like Nicaragua, Ghana and Vietnam. The goal is to help residents of achieve independence by giving them bikes.

It costs the organization $40 to collect, process, ship, rebuild and distribute each bicycle. A donation toward shipping costs is necessary – a suggested minimum is $10 per bike. All cash and material donations are fully tax deductible and a receipt will be available at the collection site.

Working portable sewing machines will also be accepted.
