As the holiday season unfolds, Philadelphia transforms into a luminous wonderland, with LumiNature at the Philadelphia Zoo standing out as a premier attraction. This annual spectacle, running from November 21 through January 4, invites visitors into a mesmerizing world where wildlife themes meet dazzling light displays.

Ryan Abramson Review: A Journey Through LumiNature

LumiNature features over a million twinkling lights spread across 16 distinct zones, each offering a unique experience. The walk took about an hour, but could have been extended with visits to the food vendors, shopping and extended photo stops. The highlights include:

• Butterfly Tree: A 22-foot-tall tree adorned with 4,000 illuminated butterflies, perfect for memorable photos.
• Penguin Prismatic: A 40-foot-tall penguin glowing with 40,000 lights, presenting captivating light shows that celebrate both wildlife and Philadelphia's iconic symbols.
• Shimmer River: A 100-foot-long jungle tunnel adorned with 4,000 lights, creating an enchanting pathway.
• Coral Reef: A 20-foot-tall installation featuring a giant sea turtle, immersing visitors in an underwater fantasy.

Throughout the zoo, performers in glowing, animal-themed costumes enhance the festive atmosphere, engaging guests with their lively antics. The performers are engaging and bright - not scary for the smallest visitors. Families seemed to really be taking a lot of pix.

New Attractions for 2024

This year, LumiNature introduces several exciting additions:

• Polar Play: A choose-your-own-adventure experience where children can explore an arctic fox's den and interact with penguin puppets.
• Beary Sweet Zone: A candy-themed area featuring illuminated bears and snowmen, complemented by a shop offering treats and souvenirs.
• Wild Flurries: An area adorned with giant snowflakes, each containing hidden animal patterns for visitors to discover.

• Dates: November 21, 2024, to January 4, 2025. (Note: Ryan Abramson went Thanksgiving Weekend 2024)
• Hours: 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM on select nights.

Planning Your Visit

To make the most of your LumiNature experience, pay attention to the psychology of the advertising. The engineers and artists of this experience really made the most of out the zoo, sans animals. It is brilliant (light pun intended). Here is some other important info:

• Attire: Dress warmly to comfortably enjoy the outdoor exhibits. You're outside and heat is limited. Bundle up like an Eagles game in December. It's all walking. There are not really places to sit down and hang out. So plan to keep on moving.
• Dining: Various food and beverage options are available throughout the zoo, including hot cocoa, cider, and gourmet popcorn. At normal prices!
• Parking: Available for $19 per vehicle, with free parking for zoo members. (Note: I parked in the garage. It was easy in and out. The garage exit puts you right onto 76, to 676 to 95 and back to Bucks County.)

One super important fact: The animals are not on display. There are a very few possible live animal glimpses (we saw a zebra). This is really all about the lights of the show.
