Scammers Cost Newtown Residents Airline Miles, $3K In Gift Cards
Police also investigated several thefts from vehicles, a fraudulent account, and an assault.
NEWTOWN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Newtown Township Police Department reported the following incidents between July 7 and 13:
Friday, July 7
- A Wrightstown Township resident contacted police at 10:35 a.m. to report a fraud. An unknown subject gained unauthorized access to his airline account and removed miles. The total value of loss was $2,758.25.
Saturday, July 8
- At approximately 12 p.m. police were contacted in regards to an assault that took place in Newtown Township. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
- Around 4:15 p.m. police were dispatched to Robert’s Ridge Park in Newtown Township for several thefts from motor vehicles. The investigation is ongoing at this time.
Monday, July 10
- A Newtown Township resident contacted police around 2:15 p.m. to report a fraudulent AT&T account that was generated in his name with monthly payments due. AT&T is investigating the matter, and police advised the resident to contact the major credit bureaus to notify them of the compromised identity.
Thursday, July 13
- At approximately 6:15 p.m. Newtown Township resident contacted police in reference to an incident of fraud. She explained that earlier in the month she received an email that posed as a legitimate company and called the phone number listed. The person she spoke to instructed her to buy four $500 Apple Gift Cards and two $500 Target gift cards. After she bought the gift cards, she provided the card and pin numbers to the scammer and never heard from them again. Police remind residents that anyone who demands to be paid with a gift card is a scammer. Remember that gift cards are for gifts, not for payments
