Social Media Post Leads To Calls Of Resignation For New Hope-Solebury SD Board Member, Reports Say

The post derided safety pins, which are being worn by allies of people who could face discrimination and intolerance.

A Facebook post from a New Hope-Solebury School Distinct board member led the public to call for the board member's resignation at a recent board meeting, according to the Bucks County Courier Times.

Board member Douglas McDonough posted this on his Facebook, according to the Times:

I’m glad some people are wearing safety pins. They might come in handy as a suture for any lacerations you get when you are macro-aggressively punched in the face for being such a slacktivist jack ass.”

The Times reports about 100 people showed up to the board meeting Monday, with many calling for McDonough's resignation.

McDonough reportedly said the post was meant to be satirical, apologized for the post, and said the issues of intolerance and discrimination need to be addressed in a dialogue.

Safety pins have become a symbol for people to show support for those who may experience discrimination and intolerance. Wearing safety pins became popular after the Brexit vote in the United Kingdom and found its way to the U.S. after Donald Trump won the presidential election.

The board said it would establish a code of ethics for board members and said it could not force McDonough's resignation, the Times reports.

McDonough was elected to the board in 2015 and his term is set to expire in 2019.
