Special Program Spotlights "Bucks County's Benevolent Squire"

NEWTOWN, PA — A special program devoted to George Tyler and a behind the scenes tour of Tyler Hall will be held on Monday, April 17 at the Bucks County Community College in Newtown.

The program will be presented jointly by the Newtown Historic Association and Bucks County Community College Foundation from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Zlock Performing Arts Center at Bucks County Community College, 275 Swamp Road, Newtown, PA 18940.

Daniel Tyler, the grandson of George and Stella Tyler, will deliver the keynote remarks of the evening. He is a retired professor of history at Colorado State University and author of “Bucks County’s Benevolent Squire: In Search of George Frederick Tyler.”

Tyler will show how his grandfather and grandmother, Stella Elkins, managed to represent the class of "Perennial Philadelphians" into which they were born, while at the same time using their talents and inherited wealth to benefit society.

In addition, Matthew Metcalf, the coordinator of Historic Preservation at Bucks County Community College, will provide an informative overview of the architectural history of Tyler Hall.

After the lecture, attendees will be given a private, behind the scenes tour of Tyler Hall, including rooms that are generally off limits to the public such as Stella's bedroom, George's study, and the Pub.
