Starbucks To Police Officer Banned From Bathroom: 'We're Sorry'

Some called for a boycott of Starbucks after a barista in Philly denied a police officer access to the shop's bathroom.

Starbucks has ”personally apologized” to a Philadelphia police officer who was told he could not use the restroom at a Center City location last week, a company spokesperson told Patch Monday.

It started Friday, when a post shared on Starbuck’s Facebook claimed a uniformed officer who asked for the key code to use the bathroom was denied by the barista. ”She states in a loud voice so all the other customers can hear that the bathroom is for paying customers only,” according to the officer.

The post, which was written by the officer who was denied access to the facilities but shared by a fellow officer on Starbucks’ Facebook page, goes on to say the barista smirked at the officer and asked if he was a paying customer.

“This is the world cops live in anymore. It’s hip for this generation to berate and totally disrespect cops in front of the public and praise cop killers as the heros,” said the post, which has been shared thousands of times.

A Starbucks spokesperson told Patch this experience was “not consistent with the welcoming and friendly environment we strive to create for everyone” at the coffee shop’s locations.

“We have personally apologized to the customer and look forward to welcoming him back to our store,” the Starbucks spokesperson said.

In the meantime, Starbucks faced plenty of backlash for the barista’s decision and the subsequent airing of it on social media.

Since the officer’s account was posted Friday night, customers flocked to the company’s Facebook page to express their thoughts about the issue, with some saying they’re boycotting.

“Well day 1 of skipping my after noon coffee because i see nothing of an apology or what you did to the employee who refused to let the cop use the restroom,” one customer wrote.

“Starbucks, shame on you! An Officer of the law, who puts their life on the line every day for PUBLIC SAFETY, isn’t allowed to use your restroom because they weren’t a paying customer!,” another wrote.
