NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — South State Street won’t be closing this week for additional utility work despite a notification sent out by PennDOT announcing a three-month road closure beginning today.

At Wednesday night’s borough council meeting, Newtown Borough Manager Craig Totaro updated the community on the project and said the earliest any work would begin on the ongoing PECO gas main installation project is mid-May.

When the work resumes from the railroad track south to the Newtown Bypass, it may or may not result in a full street closure and a daytime traffic detour.

Totaro said he will be meeting with PECO next week to get an update on the project and what the borough can expect with regard to potential road closures and detours.

Totaro did say that the repaving and restoration of the street from Centre Avenue to the railroad tracks is now expected to happen in mid-June. That work had previously been scheduled for an April to May time frame.

PECO has been working in the borough since last spring installing a new gas main on South State Street as part of a multi-million-dollar utility upgrade.
