“Clerk” is a term used by Quakers for the leaders of their Meeting and their operating committees, believing it is more reflective of their strong beliefs in the equal value of all people. Quakers believe all people are equal in the eyes of God. Therefore, Quakers tend to avoid using titles like President, CEO or Chairperson within the Religious Society of Friends because they believe such titles suggest hierarchical structures among members of their communities. Quakers do not “vote” on items of business but rather reach agreement among all members present by a “sense of the meeting” before “approving” action items on an agenda.

Susan Hoskins has previously served Newtown Friends Meeting as Assistant Clerk, and on the Peace and Service, Care and Counsel, Worship and Ministry, and Newtown Friends School Committees. She is a third generation member of the meeting. Susan lives in Langhorne with her husband Scott, a teacher at George School. They have two adult sons who graduated from Newtown Friends School and George School. Susan also serves on the board of the Friends Foundation for the Aging. She earned her BA from Earlham College (Quaker) in Richmond, IN and her Master of Social Work (MSW) degree from Rutgers Graduate School of Social Work in New Brunswick, NJ.

Chiyo Moriuchi is a program manager for Columbia University's Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center (NY). She was previously an Asset and Portfolio Manager for La Salle Investment Management working in New York and Japan. She is a former board member of the Nisei Student Relocation Commemorative Fund and speaks publicly on the Japanese American experience during World War II. She serves on the Boards of George School, Medford Leas, and the Thomas Scattergood Behavioral Health Foundation. She received her BA from Mount Holyoke College, an MBA in Finance and an MPH in Public Health from Columbia University. Chiyo lives in Newtown with her husband, Mark Haber. Their two children graduated from George School.

Newtown Friends Meeting is open to the public for all events, with Sunday School classes for children and adults at 9:45 a.m. and worship “after the manner of Friends” at 11 a.m. Childcare is provided.
