Tamanend District Cub Scouts Compete at Pinewood Derby

Cub scouts from Washington Crossing Council's converged at Goodnoe Elementary School in Newtown for Tamanend District Pinewood Derby.

Cub scouts from Washington Crossing Council’s converged at Goodnoe Elementary School in Newtown for Tamanend District Pinewood Derby on Sunday, April 10, 2016. Packs from the southern Bucks County sent the top performers in their local Pinewood Derbies to compete at the district level.

Pinewood Derby is a much anticipated spring event in the scouting calendar. The tradition which started in 1953 requires the boys, along with an adult helper, to design, build and decorate a small wooden race car. Pinewood cars must meet strict specifications for size, weight and materials, but the designs reflect the individuality and interests of each boy.

“The boys get a lot out of Pinewood Derby” said Dave Brown who has organized district Pinewood Derby for 10 years. “They get a chance to demonstrate good sportsmanship, woodworking skills, creativity and individuality and of course have fun along the way too.”

Over 270 Tigers, Bears, Wolves, Webelos and Arrow of Light cub scouts raced on a specially designed track in five different elimination rounds divided by rank.

Winners of the Tiger Division were Liam O. of Newtown Grant Homeowners Association’s Pack 99, Aidan D. of Addisville Reformed Church’s Pack 145 and Liam E. of St. Bede’s Catholic Church’s Pack 280.
