Troop 29 Eagle Scout Hugh Collins Completes a Service Project at St. Andrew's Catholic Education Center

Troop 29's Hugh Collins created a "Project Riser" for his former elementary school as part of the requirements for Eagle Scout rank.

Troop 29’s newest Eagle Scout Hugh Collins wanted to do something for the elementary school he attended as his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project. At the suggestion of Nancy Matteo, principal of Newtown’s St. Andrew Education Center, Hugh led a group of volunteers in the completion of Project Riser.

The project features hand stenciled multiplication tables on the risers in the building’s stairwells to help reinforce what the students are learning in the classroom. The volunteers spent 137 man hours priming, painting and hand-stenciling each riser.

Hugh began his trail to Eagle as a cub scout in Readington Township New Jersey and crossed over to Troop 4016 in Bellingham before joining Troop 29 at Lutheran Church of God’s Love in Newtown. He has served Troop 29 as Patrol Leader and is currently Senior Patrol Leader. Hugh is a brotherhood member in Order of the Arrow Ajapeu Lodge where he serves as their Service Chair. He recently coordinated the acorn planting project at Ockanickon Scout Reservation and organized volunteers at Washington Crossing Council’s Scoutfest. Hugh attended National Order of the Arrow Conclave in 2015 and worked as a life guard at OSR in 2016.
