Newtown Scout Completes Project To Help Haitian Families
Troop 29 scout Jake Anderson was inspired to collect cereal boxes for Papillon, a Haitian organization that provides jobs to help families.
With the help of Troop 29 and the Homeschool Support Network of New Jersey, Jake Anderson was able to send over 175 empty cereal boxes to Haiti where they will be turned into jewelry. The beneficiary of the First Class Scout's project is Papillon Enterprises, a group that works to provide a living wage to parents in order that they may keep their families together.
Jake was inspired by a book, Do Hard Things: A Teenage Rebellion Against Low Expectations, which he read with his coop class to choose a project outside of his comfort zone. He collected boxes from his troop, from Publicis Touchpoint Solutions, and outside a local grocery store where many donors left the entire package. Cereal collected was later donated to the Trenton Area Soup Kitchen (TASK).
A bake sale was held a bake sale by the coop at their curriculum and book sale event to earn money to cover the shipping costs. Once the cereal boxes arrive in Haiti, a single cereal box can be worth as much as $40 to a local craftsman.
