Troop 99 Eagle Scout Chantz Kouveras Completes Service Project to Honor Civil War Veterans
Eagle Scout Chantz Kouveras of Washington Crossing recently completed a Civil War Veteran Marker Procurement Project in Philadelphia.
Chantz Bryce Kouveras is Newtown Troop 99’s newest Eagle Scout. As part of the requirements for earning the highest rank in scouting, Chantz completed an Eagle Scout Service Project that reflected his respect for those who have fought for our rights and freedoms as Americans.
After learning that many veterans of the Civil War had not received proper recognition for their service, he contacted Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia and was given the names of three veterans who were buried in unmarked graves there. Chantz researched the service records for Horace Ashmead, Joseph Abbey and Anthony Angelo and was able to provide documentation for each in order to obtain markers for their gravesites. Once they were installed, Chantz held a dedication ceremony to honor the men.
Highlights of his scouting career include camping at Ockanickon Scout Reservation, trips to Boston, New York and Washington, DC as well as winning the coveted saber at the West Point Scoutmasters’ Council Camporee. He served his troop as Chaplain Aide at Philmont Scout Ranch and BSA Sea Base. He is a member of Order of the Arrow Ajapeu Lodge 2 and a Newtown Snow Angel.
