The annual shotgun deer hunt at Tyler State Park is scheduled for Dec. 2.

Tyler State Park’s shotgun deer hunt is scheduled for Dec. 2.

The 1,711-acre park that spans Newtown and Northampton townships will be closed to the public during the one-day shotgun hunt, which is held annually to reduce the population of white-tailed deer.

A maximum of 150 hunters selected through lottery will be permitted to attend the hunt using manual, semi-automatic or muzzleloader shotguns with “00” buckshot.

The Bucks County Courier Times reports the shot gun deer hunt has been held since 1987, but that won’t stop protesters from again speaking out against the event.

Lower Makefield resident Barbara Pearl, who leads the anti-hunt group called Deerfriends, told the publication she will lead a protest at the park entrance the day of the hunt.
