Utility Scam Again Making The Rounds In Upper Makefield

Police said someone is calling residents demanding that they call another number or their electricity will be cut off.

UPPER MAKEFIELD, PA — A utility scam is again making the rounds in the township.

Police said someone is calling residents demanding that they call another number or their electricity will be cut off if they don’t make a payment using gift cards.

“No matter your feelings about PECO, they do not operate this way,” police said. “Never ever does any utility company or other service provider demand to be paid in gift cards. Never allow yourself to be pressured into providing bank account information, your date of birth, social security number, etc.”

Police said the best course of action is to terminate these phone calls. "If you are concerned that it could have been a legitimate collection effort, then call the utility provider to confirm or call the police.

“There is no shortage of scammers trying to separate you from your hard-earned money,” said police. “So please, do not make their job easy. Be vigilant and when in doubt, call us.”
