Rather than concentrating on statistics and facts, the film near-wordlessly portrays the sheer physical effort demanded of the birds on their disparate routes. Along the way, viewers see the many dangers they face, from man-made waste to a group of hungry crabs.
Most of the footage was shot using in-flight cameras, allowing the viewer to “fly” alongside the birds of successive species, especially Canada geese. They traverse every kind of weather and landscape, covering vast distances in a flight for survival.
