Young Award-winning Poet, Violet Myles, to Speak at Newtown Quaker Meetinghouse

Violet Myles, a George School senior and member of Newtown Quaker Meeting, will speak and read her poetry at the adult class of Newtown Friends Meeting, 219 Court Street, Sunday, October 30 at 9:45 a.m. Following the presentation, there will be Meeting for Worship at 11 a.m. with coffee and snacks served afterwards in the Gathering Room. Child Care is provided and the public is welcome at all events.

Violet is a life long resident of Newtown Borough and a member of Newtown Meeting. Her passion for writing has taken her to prestigious summer writing programs across the nation including The Bard College Institute for Writing and Thinking, Juniper Institute of Young Writers, and Iowa Young Writers' Studio. For the past two years, Violet was awarded First Runner Up in the Bucks County High School Poet of the Year Contest. Violet is an aspiring film maker, but plans to continue writing for the rest of her life.

Violet was named First Runner Up this year from among 130 entries in the 29th annual young poets’ contest administered by Bucks County Community College as part of the Bucks County Poet Laureate program. One of Violet’s prize-winning poems is below:

Growing Up

We would bite into ladybugs

and let the juices

run down our chins

and stain our shirts.

We would go to the laundromat

and stick our heads

in the washing machines.

We wanted to wash

all this dirtiness

from our skin.

We never had enough

quarters to finish the job.

Part of growing up

is knowing when the floor

is lava

and when it is just a floor.

I think maybe

you just want

to know I'm alive.

So I leave you voicemails

of me breathing.

Especially in the winter.

This is the time when

I feel most dead.

Newtown Friends Meeting co-founded by "Peaceable Kingdom" painter and Quaker minister, Edward Hicks, in 1815, is open to all who wish to attend. Regular First Day Education classes (Sunday School) for all ages begin at 9:45 a.m. and Meeting for Worship begins at 11 a.m. Childcare is provided.
