UPPER MERION, PA — Biopharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has agreed to invest $800 million in expanding its operations in Montgomery County, growing its Upper Merion facility and bringing hundreds of new jobs over the next several years.
New construction is expected to begin at GSK's existing Upper Merion facility in 2027, with a new "biopharmaceutical innovation and manufacturing hub" providing key commercial production, research, and development for the company at a single location.
"GSK's decision to make another major investment in Pennsylvania is a strong signal that we have the innovation ecosystem, talent, and infrastructure to support the next generation of biopharmaceutical manufacturing," said Department of Community and Economic Development Secretary Rick Siger said in a statement. "This project will create hundreds of new jobs, strengthen the economy, and build on GSK's longstanding commitment to Pennsylvania
Roughly 300 new jobs are expected, in addition to the 4,500 already in place in Upper Merion.
The news comes less than a year after another global pharma giant, Johnson and Johnson, announced plans to build a $1 billion campus in Lower Gwynedd.
Existing buildings will be demolished, while new plants, research buildings, manufacturing facilities, quality control labs, and more will be added.
GSK's president, Regis Simard, said that the R&D facilities in Upper Merion will "accelerate the development and supply of future medicines for patients."
GSK's US headquarters is in nearby Philadelphia. The company made a similar $800 million investment in its Lancaster County operations in the fall of 2024.
