Majoros' new designation grants him certain powers unavailable to the general clergy, the Archiodiocese of Philadelphia said in a press release.

Majoros will be able to hear certain confessions and to absolve sins in the name of the Pope, the Archdiocese said.

These specific types of sins are generally known as sins "reserved to the Holy See," and traditionally only pardonable by the Pope.

Majoros will perform his duties throughout the Archdiocese of Philadelphia until the end of what the church calls its "Jubilee Year of Mercy," which ends on Novembe 20, 2016.

Majoros became a priest in May of 1979 and was granted the promotion to monsignor by Pope Benedict in 2009.
