CHOP Breaks Ground On Major New Facility In King Of Prussia

The sprawling new 250,000 square-foot facility marks a major suburban expansion for the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

KING OF PRUSSIA, PA — The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia has officially broken ground on a sprawling new facility in King of Prussia.

A ceremonial groundbreaking event was held on Thursday, Sept. 26, bringing the project, originally announced in June 2018, one step closer to fruition.

The 250,000 square-foot inpatient hospital marks a major suburban expansion for CHOP, which has also laid out plans for a 37,000 square-foot specialty and urgent care facility in Abington.

"Upper Merion is home to one of the best shopping malls in the world in the King of Prussia Mall, we're home to one of the greatest national historical parks in the world in Valley Forge," said Upper Merion Supervisor Greg Waks. "It's only fitting that we become home to the greatest children's hospital in the world which will provide vital services to our immediate community and beyond."

The facility aims to be operational in 2021.

The new building will include 52 inpatient beds, 16 pediatric intensive care unit beds, and 36 medical surgical unit beds. It will operate alongside the existing Specialty Care and Surgery Center in King of Prussia, and will allow continuous care of patients without relocation to the University City campus.

Further features will include a 24-hour emergency department, four operating rooms, radiology services, and further pediatric specialties like orthopedics, plastic surgery, and ear, nose, and throat care, according to CHOP officials.
