Investigation Into Fentanyl Overdose From Gummies Ongoing: Montco DA
Officials pointed to an "unregulated industry" and warned residents to be cautious in the latest update on the investigation.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Days after Montgomery County authorities said that fentanyl and heroin were found in locally-sold CBD and THC gummies, leading to at least two overdoses, the investigation remains ongoing. It is still unclear how the gummies became contaminated with lethal narcotics, but the district attorney's office warned of an "unregulated industry" that leaves consumers in danger.
Authorities also said that they are looking into the manufacturing process of the gummies.
"We are continuing to investigate how a fentanyl overdose was caused by a THC product, although we don’t have the package of original edibles that were consumed," DA Kevin Steele said in a statement Monday. "There are many avenues we are investigating including the possibility of cross-contamination in the making and/or packaging of the THC edibles."

The lethal drugs were found inside gummies sold at three separate Tobacco Hut locations around the county. Specifically, the Strictly Delta Brand of "Delta 8 THC 600 MG Happy Cubes" caused the overdoses, officials said, and two other products, “Urb Extrax” and “Packwoods Coned," were both found to contain heroin and fentanyl.

More than 100 products were seized from the three stores within the county, the DA's office said. Using a special detection technology called Ionscan 600, police said that they detected illegal narcotics in a "significant number, but not all" of the seized products.
Steele, however, maintained that his office's concern is with the industry at large.
"Rather than identifying specific brands of Delta 8 THC gummies and edibles, it is more important for the public to know it is 'buyer beware' in the world of Delta 8 edibles," he added. "A toddler getting ahold of them and ingesting them or a teenager who eats a handful at once could be very dangerous, and we need the public to know that."
Steele added that the DA's office also does not know if this is a widespread issue at other Tobacco Huts or other businesses offering CBD in the state, but they're working with state and federal law enforcement to investigate further.
Officials did not specity which Tobacco Hut stores in the county had the drugs, but police chiefs from Whitpain Township, Montgomery Township, and Hatfield Township were all in attendance for Friday morning's public announcement. Those townships each have a Tobacco Hut location.
Authorities are urging residents to not consume any flavors of the Strictly Delta brand of CBD gummies. If you have any in your possession, authorities say to call the Montgomery County Detective Bureau at 610-278-3368 to turn them over for testing.
