Elmwood Zoo Gets $200K Grant To Improve Special Needs Programs

Elmwood Zoo has received a $200,000 grant to improve its programs for guests with special needs.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Elmwood Zoo has received a $200,000 grant to improve its programs for guests with special needs.

Elmwood, which earlier this year was the first zoo in the world to be named a first Certified Autism Center, caught the eye of The Hess Foundation, they said.

"I was overcome with excitement and appreciation when I received news of the grant,” Jennifer Conti, Elmwood Park Zoo's Development Director, said in a statement. "We are truly committed to providing the best experience possible to each person who passes through our gates, and our guests with special needs are no exception."

The designation as a Certified Autism Center comes from the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), a worldwide organization that works to certify programs and organizations serving those with autism and mental disorders.

Specifically, certification requires extensive staff training and an audit of the zoo which worked to make it more friendly towards those with sensory needs. Recent programs, such as an autism-friendly Halloween event, were organized with guests with special needs in mind.
