Elmwood Zoo's Beloved Elk, Mary, Passes Away At 21
Elmwood Zoo has lost one of their elders. The zoo's elk, Mary, has died at nearly 22 years of age.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Elmwood Park Zoo's elk, Mary, has passed away at nearly 22 years of age, the zoo announced Wednesday morning.
"Mary has helped to educate thousands of guests throughout her life and will be missed by staff and volunteers alike," the zoo said in a statement noting her passing.
While at Elmwood, Mary gave birth to two calves. One of them, Sharon, still lives at Elmwood.

Mary was suffering from arthritis for the past several years, zoo officials said.
Her condition has worsened over recent weeks, and officials made the difficult decision to euthanize her.

The zoo said that the average lifespan for elk is around 10 to 13 years.
