THE DARKEST DAY: The Exeter Train Wreck

On May 12, 1899, after spending the day in Harrisburg for the dedication of the statue to Montgomery County’s native son, General John F. Hartranft, the weary travelers from Montgomery County were eager to return home. Suddenly the silence was broken by the wrenching of the train from its track and the piercing sound of twisted metal. More than thirty people were killed, many of whom are buried in Montgomery Cemetery. Learn their stories and share the families’ sorrow as the tour weaves its way through the cemetery. While the events of this tour cover true historical events, the tour will present this story in dramatic fashion. This tour, first presented in 2009, has been updated with new research and discoveries.

The Historical Society of Montgomery County is located at 1654 DeKalb Street, Norristown, PA 19401. For further information, please call 610-272-0297 or e-mail us at contact_us@hsmcpa.org.
