The boy fought a courageous five year battle with cancer. Rest in peace.

NORRISTOWN, PA - The Norristown boy who was blessed by Pope Francis during his visit to Philadelphia in September has passed away, his family announced late Sunday night.

Landon Vargas, who was diagnosed with cancer when he four years old, died on Saturday night.

“It saddens us to have to say this but our precious son Landon, went to live with God Saturday evening,” his family said on his Facebook support page. ”We will miss him dearly but are glad to know he is finally healthy and happy sitting next to our Lord. Landon was an intelligent, funny and loving 9 year old that touched many in his short time. He fought valiantly for 5 years. We don’t know anyone tougher or braver than him.”

Landon turned nine in November. His fall had been full of excitement, as in October, he met and posed for a picture with former Phillie Shane Victorino at an Eagles game.

Landon’s life will be celebrated on Saturday at a viewing from 9:30 a.m. until 11:45, a mass at 12, an internment, and a luncheon.

The Facebook page in support of him generated a huge following. Inspirational quotes were regularly posted, like the following:
