Killed in the Line of Duty: Norristown Law Enforcement Officers Who Lost Their Lives

NORRISTOWN, PA —To date, there have been 905 deaths while in the line of duty in Pennsylvania, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page.

Gunfire has by far been the leading cause of death of officers in Pennsylvania, accounting for nearly half of incidents.

Of those, five were general accidents, three were aircraft accidents, seven animal related, 42 assaults, 72 automobile accidents, two bomb related, 12 drownings, seven duty related illnesses, one electrocution, two explosions, three exposed to toxins, 17 falls, four from fire, 410 to intentional gunfire, 23 to accidental gunfire, 69 heart attacks, one from heat exhaustion, 61 motorcycle accidents, 16 stabbed, eight struck by a streetcar, 11 struck by trains, 67 struck by vehicles, two train accidents, one training accident, 24 vehicle pursuits, and 29 vehicular assaults.

In addition, there have been 12 K9's who have died in the line of duty in the state.

In Norristown, there has been one officer death:

• Officer Thomas M. Barone was answering a domestic disturbance on October 11, 1992 when he was shot multiple times, according to the Officer Down Memorial Page. The suspect died in prison. Barone, 32, was a two-year veteran of the force.
