Montgomery County officials have declared a Code Red Hot Weather Health Warning for Thursday.

NORRISTOWN, PA — Montgomery County officials have declared a Code Red Hot Weather Health Warning for Thursday, they announced Wednesday afternoon.

The National Weather Service has also issued an Excessive Heat Warning covering the same period of time.

Temperatures could rise into the mid-90s, with dewpoints as high as the lower 70s, according to forecasters. That would put the heat index at around 105.

Very young children, the elderly, and those with chronic medical conditions are especially at risk. Officials urge residents to check on their friends and neighbors if they believe they may be at risk.

County officials offer the following tips to residents to help beat the heat:

  • Drink plenty of non-alcoholic, non-caffeinated fluids.
  • Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing.
  • If at all possible, try to get outdoor work completed during the morning to avoid the warmest part of the
  • day.
  • Keep windows and interior doors open when running a fan at home.
  • Keep cool by seeking an air-conditioned building if available, if not, seek rest in the shade.
  • Most of the Senior Adult Activity Centers (SAACs) are air-conditioned, as are malls and libraries.

Things are expected to cool down on Friday, with a high of only 80, but temperatures will rise over the weekend and could approach 90 degrees on Sunday.
