Nick Foles' Future With The Eagles: The Latest

Nick Foles has reportedly voided the Eagles $20M option on him for next season, but the Eagles still hope to trade him. Here's how.

PHILADELPHIA, PA — Nick Foles has reportedly voided the Eagles $20 million contract option on him for next season, shortly after the Eagles informed him that they had exercised the option.

The move leaves the Birds with just one option to hold on to to the former Super Bowl MVP in hopes of trading him: add a franchise tag on him, a process which allows a team to keep an impending free agent for a year after his contract is over at a high salary.

Adding a franchise tag to Foles (in order to trade him) has seemingly been in the Eagles plans all along, according to a recent ESPN report. But nothing has been announced yet.

The exchange between the Eagles offer and Foles' decline Tuesday night occurred within an hour, NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport said. Foles has to pay the franchise back $2 million in order to void the contract.

Rumors about Foles have been swirling ever since his stellar performance at the end of last season, culminating in the Eagles' first ever Super Bowl championship. If anything, Foles' late season run with the Eagles this year only brought more urgency to the rumors, as it became plain that he was simply too good to remain a backup. And head coach Doug Pederson has already named Carson Wentz the starting quarterback heading into next year, leaving little room for Foles.

Sources stated earlier this week that the Eagles would try to trade Foles rather than let him go in free agency. No matter what, Foles is looking at a lucrative payday; the only question is whether or not the Eagles can turn Saint Nick magic into another usable piece in their quest to return to the Super Bowl.
