Norristown Launches Plan To Reduce Gun Violence
The municipality has launched a new initiative to combat the plague of gun violence on the streets.

NORRISTOWN, PA — In the wake of a rash of shootings that have led to numerous deaths and injuries, Norristown has announced the launch of a new initiative to combat the plague of gun violence on the streets.
The borough has launched a new "40-point plan" which lays out their approach to gun violence, as well as a new body specifically created to handle the violence, the Police Chief's Advisory Board (PCAB)
Since 2014, Norristown has seen a drastic reduction in all crime. Recent months, however, have been an exception, as a string of shootings and stabbings have led to deaths and numerous injuries.

The PCAB is a crucial part of the crime-fighting effort. The board will consist of 15 to 25 members who are described as "diverse stakeholders" from around the municipality. They could be constructive community members, students, activists, clergy, volunteers, or business owners. Members will serve a renewable one-year term; students will serve a maximum of one year.
“I welcome and look forward to having a qualified group of community members to engage and collaborate with to fight crime, build trust, and create impactful policing concepts," Norristown Police Chief Mark Talbot said.

According to the department, the new PCAB will have the following responsibilities:
- Act as sounding board for the Police Chief regarding community needs/concerns, as well as community response to proposed programs and priorities.
- Apprise the Chief directly of the community’s needs for police services.
- Assist in educating the community at large about the function and role of the Norristown Police Department.
“The Council is proud to have a Police Department that is open to discuss and brainstorm with residents about enhancing the quality of life in our community. I encourage residents to apply and help us develop these recommendations," Council President Sonya Sanders said.
