Norristown Man Charged In Hit And Run Crash With School Bus: DA

The man was weaving in and out of traffic when he slammed into the bus, causing injuries to several children on board, before speeding away.

NORRISTOWN, PA — A Norristown man has been charged after fleeing the scene of a crash with a school bus last week in Lancaster County, the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office announced on Thursday. The crash caused injuries to several children on the bus.

James P. Irvin III, 46, is facing 35 total counts of various charges, including 16 felony and misdemeanor counts of leaving scene of an accident involving injury of death, and leaving the scene while improperly licensed.

The incident occurred on May 18 on state Route 30 (Lincoln Highway) in East Lampeter Township in Lancaster County.

Irvin was reportedly weaving in and out of traffic when he struck the school bus, causing multiple collisions that eventually led to the bus crashing on its side.

All 14 students aboard, from Lancaster Mennonite School, were injured in the crash. The 65-year-old driver was also injured.

Irvin then sped away east on Route 30.

On Wednesday, Irvin contacted police through an attorney. Police recovered Irvin's damaged car at his parents' home in East Lampeter, where has been staying recently.

Bail was set at $100,000. A preliminary hearing is forthcoming, and the investigation is ongoing.

Authorities said on Thursday that one of the students, a six-year-old boy, remains hospitalized.
