Norristown, Upper Merion Schools Closed Tuesday Over Coronavirus

Students and parents in the Upper Merion and Norristown districts are among those who had contact with the CHOP doctor with coronavirus.

NORRISTOWN, PA — The Upper Merion and Norristown Area School Districts will be closed on Tuesday over concerns about the spread of coronavirus.

A student and a parent in Norristown are among those who had contact with the CHOP doctor with coronavirus. Officials said that 13 children from Montgomery County had contact with the cardiologist at his King of Prussia outpatient clinic.

The student and parent in Norristown have not shown symptoms, the school district said, but they've nonetheless been advised to self-quarantine for two weeks.

Norristown called the decision to close Tuesday as an "abundance of caution." All schools in both Norristown and Upper Merion will undergo disinfection and a deep cleaning.

"I commend NASD for communicating effectively with the Montgomery County Office of Public Health, and for exercising thoughtful and appropriate caution and care for the safety and well-being of our students and educators," State Rep. Joe Webster said in a statement.

Special attention will be given to frequently touched surfaces in the deep cleans.

Norristown has also canceled all field trips for the remainder of the week. Wednesday's music festival and Friday's Math 24 competitions will be rescheduled.

Upper Merion has canceled all after school and evening activities Tuesday.
