Pennsylvania Turnpike Toll Increase Coming In 2017

Pennsylvania Turnpike toll rates will increase by 6 percent in 2017, the same margin they increased by in 2016.

Drivers who use the Pennsylvania Turnpike as part of their daily commute are looking at increased tolls come Jan. 8.

The funds will be used to pay for a 10-year spending plan which includes various reconstruction and road widening projects across the state.

The most common toll for a passenger vehicle will now increase from $1.16 to $1.23 for E-ZPass customers, and from $1.80 to $1.95 for cash customers. Tractor trailer tolls, meanwhile, will rise from $9.59 to $10.17 for E-ZPass motorists, and from $13.60 to $14.45 for cash motorists.

Tolls also increased 6 percent in 2016.

This will not be the last toll increase, either. Rates are expected to increase anywhere from 3 percent to 6 percent every year through 2044, according to the Times Herald.

“Last fall, the PA Turnpike observed our 75th anniversary; while that is a great accolade, it means that parts of our system have outlived their design life and are in dire need of replacement,” Turnpike Chairman Sean Logan said in a press release.

E-Z Pass customers, who pay lower tolls, comprise three quarters of turnpike drivers, the turnpike said.
