NORRISTOWN, PA — Demolition of the stands at Roosevelt Field in Norristown is nearly complete, as the ongoing redevelopment project reaches its next stage.

Once the stands are fully gone, the entire site will be mulched and seeded, and a new fence will be installed, officials said.

The demolition of the field began March 25, bringing an end to a decades-long era of football, track and field, and more for generations of Norristown area students and athletes.

The field also famously hosted then U.S. Sen. John F. Kennedy's campaign speech during the 1960 presidential race.

Roosevelt Field was purchased by the municipality last year and will be folded in to the expanding Elmwood Park, which is being redeveloped after recent damages from floods and fire. Details of the park's master plan are being ironed out by Simone Collins Landscape Architecture in partnership with the public through a series of community meetings.
