#OptOutside: Celebrate Black Friday Outdoors In Montgomery County

REI is leading the charge to get people out of stores and into the woods on Black Friday.

REI is leading the charge to get people out of stores and into the woods on Black Friday and this holiday season. They have closed their stores nationwide for the nation's biggest day of shopping in an effort to encourage outdoor activities.

REI says that millions have pledged to spend the day outside instead of shopping. Nationwide, thirteen state park systems that have daily admission prices have waived their fees in solidarity with the idea. All Pennsylvania state parks have free admission.

“More than 1.8 million people are planning to #OptOutside with us on Black Friday. It’s amazing to see so many park systems join in the movement to give Americans even more ways to connect with our country’s inspiring outdoor places. We are grateful for the park stewards and professionals who make the outdoor American experience so vibrant,” said Jerry Stritzke, REI’s CEO and president.

REI is hoping their campaign raises awareness for the need of more outdoor spaces and opportunities, especially in densely populated urban areas.

"More than half of residents under age nineteen don’t have a place to play outdoors close to home," said Will Rogers, President and CEO of the Trust for Public Land.

Several local environmental groups are supporting the cause, including Friends of the Wissahickon. The organization hosted a group hike 0n the Monoshone Trail Friday afternoon.

Another outdoor outfitter, Patagonia, is taking a different route. On normal business days, they donate one percent of their profits to charities. But on Black Friday, they will donate 100 percent of their profits.
