Scammers Now Claiming To Be Montgomery County Judge, Sheriff Says

The Montgomery County Sheriff's office is warning of recent calls by scammers claiming to be a Montgomery County judge.

MONTGOMERY COUNTY, PA — Scammers seem to be ceaselessly reinventing themselves.

The latest phone scam out of Montgomery County involves callers who are apparently claiming they are a Montgomery County judge, the sheriff's office warns.

The same callers also are impersonating or invoking the names of members of the sheriff's office in order to sell the gambit, authorities said.

In one recent case, "the scheme was thwarted by the quick thinking of the potential victim and swift action of the Sergeant who received the complaint."

Often, these calls come from local numbers — some can even manipulate caller IDs to read "Montgomery County Sheriff's Office," or other local authorities — in an attempt to convince residents of their authenticity.

Furthermore, the scammers often direct you to call back to another number, a tactic never used by real law enforcement officers, the sheriff's office said.
