The trial of an East Norriton woman accused of third-degree murder in the killing of her 96-year-old neighbor has begun, court documents show.

Elisabeth Anna Floyd, 35, pleaded not-guilty in connection to the 2015 incident.

The victim, Alfred C. Payne, 96, was walking in his driveway when authorities allege that Floyd attacked him, the DA said.

Floyd's attorneys argue that Payne simply fell and that Floyd rushed over to him to render aid, according to The Times Herald. When ambulances arrived, Floyd brought flowers over to Payne.

The DA said that Payne told first responders he had been assaulted and beaten. He suffered a broken hip in the fall, underwent surgery, and was sent to a longer-term care facility, where he died on Feb. 19, 2016.

Authorities did not specify a motive in their suspicions of Floyd.

Officials noted that Floyd and Payne had never met before the alleged attack.

Third-degree murder could lead to 20 to 40 years in prison. Floyd is free on $250,000 bail, court documents show.
