Dan Rooney, chairman of
the Pittsburgh Steelers and former U.S.ambassador to Ireland, and Carol
Peterson, an architectural historian, have written a fascinating history of
Allegheny City, known today as Pittsburgh’s North Side. Founded as a reserve land tract for Revolutionary War veterans, later known as a station along the
underground railroad, host to the first World Series, Allegheny City rose from
its simple origins to become one of the most important industrial cities in the
world and a bulwark of the American economy, alongside the city of Pittsburgh. Its annexation in 1907 by the city of Pittsburgh was highly controversial and
prompted a firestorm of public debate.
Dan Rooney is a man of few
words, but when he talks about Pittsburgh’s North Side, where he grew up, there
is much to be learned about Allegheny City’s amazing history. Carol Peterson
specializes in uncovering the history of buildings, homes and communities in
Pittsburgh. Join us at Northland Public Library for an evening of eye-opening
local history and lore. Copies of their book
will be available for purchase.
