New Recycling Law to Affect McCandless Residents

Waste industry warns Pennsylvania residents to get ready for new mandated law.

A new state law that takes full effect on January 24, 2013 will officially ban the disposal of electronic devices in landfills and incinerators. After this date, only the Department of Environmental Protection will be allowed to handle the disposal of these electronic devices affected by the law.

Earlier this year, the law required manufacturers that sell electronics in Pennsylvania to establish e-waste recycling programs that come at no extra cost to consumers in order to aid in the process of reducing, reusing and recycling electronics. Retailers will also now be required to carry only brands that have registered with the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP).

The Covered Device Recycling Act of 2010 applies to desktop and laptop computers, computer monitors and computer peripherals. The string of laws preventing e-waste will be complete in January with the prohibition of the disposal of electronic devices in landfills and incinerators.
